Small Business Stories - Roots, St John's Road, Tunbridge Wells

One of the things I love most about supporting small businesses is the people behind them. Their stories, values and reasons for starting are what make these places so special.

Sharing them through my Small Business Stories feels important - it’s a way of celebrating passion, community and the courage it takes to build something of your own. Roots is a perfect example of that.

Putting down roots in Tunbridge Wells

Roots opened in September 2024 and is the creation of Amelia, a florist whose career has taken her from large-scale event floristry in London to putting down roots in Tunbridge Wells.

Amelia began her journey working in high-end event floristry, creating designs for big-budget London events. After moving to Kent to start a family, she continued to build her experience by managing florist shops locally.

Over time, it became clear that the next step was to create something of her own - a business shaped entirely around her values, creativity and way of working.

The name Roots carries layered meaning. It reflects Amelia putting down roots in the local area, building a business that truly belongs here, while also nodding to the natural foundations of floristry, plants and flowers.

Sustainable floristry and refills for the home

Located on St John’s Road in Tunbridge Wells, Roots offers floristry for weddings, funerals, events, local deliveries and everyday bouquets and stems. Sustainability and seasonality are at the heart of the business. During the growing season, Amelia prioritises locally grown flowers, working closely with local growers TW Flower Company and TW Blooms. In the winter months, she sources from a trusted wholesaler in Devon with one of the most extensive ranges available, supplementing with Dutch flowers only where necessary. Wherever possible, flowers are sourced as locally and responsibly as they can be.

Environmental responsibility was a major driver in creating Roots. All green waste is composted on local farms, plastic is recycled and waste is kept to an absolute minimum. The shop also stocks refillable products such as the extensive range by Faith in Nature, and eco-friendly Miniml cleaning essentials, alongside Upcycle beauty products and refills, making sustainable swaps easier for customers.

Roots has been thoughtfully designed as a space you can simply pop into - whether to buy flowers, plants and pots, gift cards, or carefully sourced products from other small businesses that share the same ethos.

Everything in the shop is chosen with intention.

The next chapter for Roots

Looking ahead, Amelia plans to expand the workshop side of the business, with more hands-on sessions and the possibility of flower courses in the future. She already works closely with local popular coffee shop, Even Flow, to deliver her seasonal workshops and hopes to continue sharing her knowledge and experience.

Above all, Amelia's aim is for Roots to be known as a reliable, welcoming presence in the community - a place people can come back to again and again.
