How to prepare for a brand photoshoot
(your pre-shoot checklist for a stress-free experience)
Spring always feels like a fresh start. Longer days. Lighter mornings. That quiet sense that it might be time to refresh, reset and show up with a little more clarity.
It's a popular time to book one of my brand photography packages, but don't worry... preparation doesn’t need to feel overwhelming. In fact, a little thoughtful planning is what turns a good shoot into one you genuinely love.
As a brand photographer in Tunbridge Wells, I always say the magic happens before we even pick up the camera.
Here’s how to prepare for a brand photoshoot that feels aligned, relaxed and completely you...
Clarify your goals
Before we talk outfits or locations, it's a good idea to ask yourself:
What do I need these images for?
Website refresh? Social media content? Launching a new offer? Press features?
When you’re clear on where your brand photography will live, it shapes everything else.
If your images are for your homepage, we’ll want strong, confident hero shots. If they’re for Instagram, we might focus on storytelling moments and detail shots.
Create a mood board
You don’t need to be a designer to do this, in the lead up to your photo session you could start collecting ideas such as:
✔️ colours you’re drawn to
✔️ textures and lighting styles
✔️ poses that feel natural
✔️ images that reflect your brand personality
This isn’t about copying - it’s about clarity.
As your brand photographer, I’ll use this to understand whether you lean towards light and airy, warm and cosy, bold and modern, or calm and neutral.
And if you need any support along the way, I LOVE a mood board and am always more than happy to help!
Build a simple shot list
Think of your shoot as telling a story.
What scenes matter in your business?
✔️ you working at your desk
✔️ meeting a client
✔️ packaging products
✔️ close-ups of your hands
✔️ detail shots of tools or products
You don’t need anything complicated - just the key moments that represent what you do.
This ensures your brand photography packages deliver variety and longevity, so you’re not stuck using the same image repeatedly.
Choose outfits that feel like you
Of course we want our photos to give a good impression and draw attention, but let's not get tempted to go too overboard. Your clothes should support your brand - not overpower it.
✔️ stick to your brand colour palette
✔️ avoid busy prints
✔️ choose pieces you feel confident in
✔️ bring layers for variation
✔️ comfort equals confidence, and confidence shows in photographs
When clients book a photography session with me, I always encourage them to try outfits on beforehand so there are no last-minute surprises.
Gather props that tell your story
Your props are visual cues about what you do.
Think about what represents you and your brand...
✔️ laptop or tablet
✔️ notebook or planner
✔️ coffee cup
✔️ product samples
✔️ packaging
✔️ flowers (always welcome!)
The right props add context and personality to your brand photography without making it feel staged. You could even bring in a few branded items if you wish!
Plan your location
Your location will shape the overall feel of your images. We might shoot in your workspace, at home, outdoors or in a hired studio - each brings a different tone.
A home office feels warm and personal, outdoor settings feel relaxed and natural, while a studio offers clean, versatile images that work beautifully across your website and marketing.
As a brand photographer in Tunbridge Wells, I often help clients choose locations that reflect their energy and industry.
Prepare your mindset
This is the part people often forget - you don’t need to be 'good in photos' or know how to pose or feel 100% confident. That’s my role. I’ll guide you every step of the way.
Before your shoot, take a few quiet minutes to get some fresh air, play music you love and reconnect with why you started your business.
When you feel relaxed and grounded, your images will look natural and authentic - and that’s always the goal.
Deep breath - you've got this! I'm here with you every step of the way ✨
